Clare CarmodyBArch Hons
After graduating with her Bachelor of Architecture Degree with honours in 2004 Clare joined Abacus and subsequently Smart Alliances in 2007. Having grown up in Blenheim, Clare says she was delighted to be able to return to an area she is so familiar with and passionate about.
Passion for sustainable high performance designs
Clare has a special passion for designing buildings that work efficiently in the Top of the South’s demanding environment. “Sustainable principles are not just about climate change – they’re about the building’s efficiency. Warm in winter, cool in summer. We have a lot of sunshine” says Clare. “That’s great for natural solar heat gain in winter but conversely it presents challenges to stop over heating in summer.” That is as important in commercial designs as it is in residential designs.
Clare says one of the best things about being part of the Smart Alliances team is the inter-disciplinary approach. “Right from the concept we are working with the planners and engineers so what we present to our clients will work for them, not require redesign to accommodate planning rules or structural design.”
3D design changing the client’s experience
Her skill set means that she can help her clients all the way from feasibility and concept design, into the design development and consenting phases, right through to procurement, tendering, contract management and completion. Currently Clare is enjoying developing her 3D computer drawing and rendering skills. “The days of working with pen and paper and the client having to imagine what the finished building will look like are gone. Now we design in 3D and provide perspective images from any angle.”
Clare has been involved in a broad range of projects including residential alterations, additions and new builds. Commercially she has completed a number of office and shop fit outs, new complexes and public amenity buildings.
